D-Day Exhibition
Event Description
An exhibition to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, telling the story of the Second World War from a local perspective.Discover about the Grimsby airman who dropped food parcels from his Lancaster, the lad from Brighowgate Children's Home who served on the cruiser HMS Sheffield and the Cleethorpes soldier who took part in the D-Day landings.
Visitors will also be able to browse resources relating to a Matilda tank named "Grimsby", the presentation Spitfires that were financed by local people and the air raid shelters that were constructed to protect the civilian population.
Adrian Wilkinson, Archivist, Lincs Inspire said: "This exhibition is being held to pay tribute to those who helped to liberate Europe 80 years ago. The display will also shed light on the contribution made by those who fought the war on the home front. Visitors will have the chance to discover some fascinating wartime stories, including the Grimsby air-gunner who nearly fell victim to his own side, and the Lincolnshire fighter pilot who was awarded one of Poland's most prestigious decorations"
