Lost Landmarks Exhibition

Event Description

Laurel and Hardy’s visit to Grimsby is one of many stories to be retold at a free nostalgic exhibition.

The British-American comedy duo performed in 1954 at one of the town’s iconic lost landmarks - the Palace Theatre, one of many well-known buildings that will feature in the exhibition.

Once one of the longest bars in England, Grimsby’s Gloucester Arms, will also feature, as well as the Rialto Cinema, an establishment with an unfortunate reputation for being infested with fleas.

Adrian Wilkinson, Archivist with Lincs Inspire said: “Visitors will also be able to discover stories of some of the town’s colourful characters, such as the zookeeper who invited an elephant to his wedding and the intrepid female balloonist who took off from People’s Park!”

Other lost landmarks to feature include the Corn Exchange, the Royal Dock Hotel and Grimsby District Hospital. As well as less familiar buildings, such as Alfred Terrace, St James’ House on Bargate, and the Queen Victoria Memorial Tower.

Finally, there will also be a chance to see evocative images of some of the local railway infrastructure that has been lost over time, including Wellowgate Signal Box, Weelsby Road Underpass, and the old Newmarket Street Footbridge.
