Park Life

Join us at a free exhibition to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the opening of Grant Thorold Park.

Park Life will tell the story of Grant Thorold Park (officially opened on 30th June 1904), and its surrounding streets, from Edwardian times to 21st century.

Discover some interesting and unusual stories connected with the area, including the visit by Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, the local cinema known as the “Bug Hut”, and the parish church that started to collapse 15 years after it was built.

Browse resources relating to local churches, shops, and businesses and learn about impact of the Second World War on the area.

The exhibition will also pay tribute to some local heroes.

Date: Sunday 7th July

Time: 11am to 4pm

Venue: Grant Thorold Park

The event is part of a wider family event.

The display will include many interesting photographs of the park and its surroundings streets. As visitors will discover, the park has played an important part in local life: many concerts were held in its now-vanished bandstand, an air raid shelter once stood in its south-east corner, and coronations and jubilees have been celebrated on its lawns.
