“Shop ‘Til You Drop”

A department store terrorised by squirrels and a Grimsby chemist who invented an anti-aging liquid are amongst the stories to be retold at a free nostalgic exhibition.

‘Shop ‘Til You Drop’ will take visitors on a journey through shopping centres, supermarkets and music shops in North East Lincolnshire from times gone by.

The exhibition will feature photographs of shops on Freeman Street, Victoria Street and St Peter’s Avenue to name a few. There will also be chance to browse record sleeves from 70 years ago.

Adrian Wilkinson, Archivist, Lincs Inspire, said: “This exhibition will chart the history of the local retail sector from the Victorian period until the early years of the 21st century. Come along and find out more about some of the area’s well-known retailers, including Guy & Smith, Albert Gait, Boyes, and the Monkey, Pig and Pie Shop.”

Learn about some interesting and unusual stories, including the department store that was terrorised by squirrels, a fight between two neighbouring hardware dealers on Freeman Street, and the Grimsby chemist who claimed that a bottle of his “restorer” could return grey hair back to its original colour within 6 days!

The exhibition takes place at Grimsby Town Hall on Wednesday April 3, 10am to 4pm.
