Volunteer in Libraries

Lincs Inspire’s volunteering opportunities provide the chance for you to make a difference to others, whilst gaining new skills and experience.

Home Library Service

Lincs Inspire Libraries provide a Home Library Service to housebound people and their carers who, because of personal circumstances, are unable to visit a library.

By volunteering you will make a difference to others, whilst gaining new skills and experience. Your role as a volunteer will include:

  • Spending time with your clients in their own home (please note that this is not the case during COVID restrictions)
  • Chatting with your readers about their personal reading tastes
  • Selecting items for your readers in a range of formats to suit their needs
  • Liaising with Home Library Service staff
  • Returning books and other materials to the library
Keeping records of loans to individual readers

We value our volunteers and that’s why we support you:

  • Offer a full induction and training programme
  • We are always available for ongoing support
  • We ask you to decide how many readers you would like to visit
  • Ensure you are partnered with another suitable and friendly volunteer, so you will not visit any reader on your own
  • Partner you with a driver if you are a non-driver, have no access to a vehicle or prefer not to drive
  • Pay a quarterly mileage allowance to volunteers using their own vehicle
    Organise volunteer meetings

In return for supporting you as a volunteer, we ask that you:

  • Commit at least one day each month
  • Be reliable and friendly
  • Keep your readers informed of any changes to your book delivery day
  • Complete minimal paperwork
  • Agree to complete an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS) – this is free of charge for our volunteers

Library Teams

Lincs Inspire Libraries offer a broad range of volunteering opportunities within the Learning & Information Team, Community Services Team and Children & Young People’s Team.

By volunteering you will be:

  • Given the opportunity to work with a number of fascinating local history collections
  • Learn new skills
  • Discover the history of the local area

Local Heritage Projects

As a way of sharing resources and learning more about the local area and its people, Lincs Inspire Libraries often host exhibitions and projects that look to involve the community as much as possible.

We always welcome the support of enthusiastic volunteers who are looking to contribute their knowledge and expertise to such projects.

The Home Library service means everything to me, I listen to my books late into the night when I can’t sleep.

My volunteers are the kindest people in the world, they put themselves out every time. They get me whatever I want to read and choose books that I like. They won’t let me down and they always ring to let me know when they are coming to see me. I can’t fault them.

Mrs Freda Snelson

I wanted to do something worthwhile in my retirement. I enjoy reading so volunteering for the home library service was perfect.

I volunteer with a friend and we make deliveries to our customers once a month. We go to care homes as well as into people’s own homes.

I know that our customers really value what we do, but we also get a lot back from it ourselves. You can bring a smile to someone’s face by giving up a few hours of your time.
