Member of the Month

Much-loved member brings laughter and joy to exercise classes at Cleethorpes Leisure Centre.

At 87 years young, no exercise is too much for Jim Woodhouse, who leaves with a spring in step after taking part in weekly Senior Circuits and Evergreens exercise classes.

Jim joined on senior member six months ago following a friend’s recommendation, he’s now much less reliant on his walking aids and is feeling stronger, healthier and happier.

He’s also made lots of friends at the classes and socialises with a group who jokingly call themselves the ‘crazy gang’. The friendships he’s formed have been a valuable support to Jim, who sadly lost his wife two years ago.

There’s lots of people to talk to here. You don’t see too many people in the flats in the day. After the classes, we always have a cup of tea and a good laugh. The exercise has probably done me better than I realise. I try to push myself, the only station I couldn’t do was the step ups, but after working on my balance with the Michelle [Fitness Instructor], I noticed today I could do it without the support of a rail.

Jim Woodhouse

Jim’s progress hasn’t gone unnoticed by the fitness team at the leisure centre, who nominated him for the member of the month award.

Joss Varley, Fitness Supervisor at Cleethorpes said: “When Jim first started, he came in on a walking frame and wasn’t very mobile. He’d stay on one spot holding something for support. Now he’s jogging up and down unaided, using a step and attending three other classes a week including Evergreens on a Monday, where he particularly enjoys the Zumba section. All this and he is 87 years old! We all love him!”

Jim’s next aim is to start exercising in the gym alongside the classes he takes part in. A massive well done on your progress Jim and for proving that age is just a number!
