Mental Health Awareness Week

Grimsby man overcomes mental health challenges using one of the town’s most inclusive and welcoming gyms.

Stephen (39) recently joined Lincs Inspire, hopeful that the benefits of exercise would improve his mental health.

Diagnosed with ADHD, PTSD, anxiety and depression, Stephen has also battled substance misuse and long sought ways to channel his energy into something positive.

Since working out at Grimsby Health & Wellbeing Centre, he’s noticed big improvements in how he thinks and feels about himself. Stephen said:

“Coming here is my safe haven; I put everything into the workout – weight training, boxing, circuits. I’ve even done yoga classes, which have helped me connect with my inner self. The staff here are great and look out for me.”

Stephen has become good mates with Fitness Instructor Sam Dobson, who’s helping him reach his goals through tailored support.

Sam said: “It’s rewarding seeing the growth in Stephen – he’s much more confident and outgoing now. Talking about mental health isn’t easy and he’s shown real courage. He’s progressing well, and it’s a friendlier and vibrant place with Stephen around.”

When asked about advice he’d give to other people with mental health challenges, Stephen said:

“There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. Challenge the demons, believe in yourself and focus on what you can change.”

Stephen was happy to share his story in the hope that it will help other people as part of UK Mental Health Awareness Week (12-18 May) led by the Mental Health Foundation.
