Michelle’s Journey of Strength, Hope, and Giving Back

Shared during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re proud to share the inspiring story of one of our very own team members – Michelle Mussell, Health & Wellbeing Fitness Instructor at Cleethorpes Leisure Centre.

Michelle previously supported members at Grimsby Health and Wellbeing Centre in the Wellness Hub. What many may not realise is that Michelle’s journey with us started not as an instructor, but as a member, taking her first steps toward recovery.

Michelle was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. After undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she was referred to the Active Forever programme by the Pink Rose Suite. She recalls being emotionally and physically drained, anxious, and unsure about returning to the world after treatment.

They thought it would be good for me to come, just to help with my confidence,” Michelle shares. “The trauma of what I’d gone through meant I was terribly anxious; I wasn’t coping very well socially.”

Initially hesitant, it took several gentle phone calls from staff before Michelle agreed to attend her first session at the Wellness Hub.

I didn’t know what to expect. I was scared, worried and anxious – but I was soon put at ease. I met others who had been through similar experiences. I wasn’t alone.”

Michelle began visiting the Hub twice a week while also receiving counselling for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She was back at work but struggling. The one place she felt safe and supported was the Hub.

“I remember being asked in counselling, ‘What is your happy place?’ and I said, ‘The toning suite’ – as it was then called. It was the only place I felt good, accepted, and normal.”

Toward the end of her referral programme, Michelle overheard that the Wellness Hub was recruiting fitness instructors. It sparked something in her.

“I didn’t think much of it at first, but I mentioned it to my husband when I got home. He said, ‘You talk about the Wellness Hub all the time – why don’t you apply?’”

Michelle knew she didn’t yet have all the qualifications, but she also knew she had the passion and lived experience to make a real difference. With determination, she set to work gaining the necessary certifications – achieving her Level 2 Gym Instructor, becoming a qualified Personal Trainer, and completing her Level 3 Exercise Referral.

“It was tough, especially while dealing with the aftereffects of treatment. But I knew it’s what I wanted to do – to help others experience the same support and transformation I had.”

Full Circle: Helping Others Heal

Now based at Cleethorpes Leisure Centre, Michelle is a valued member of the Health and Wellbeing team. Her lived experience brings empathy and authenticity to her role. While she doesn’t share her journey with everyone, she’ll open up when she feels it might help a customer.

“When I look at some referrals, they are just like mine years ago – same stage of breast cancer, similar anxiety. It’s like seeing myself in them. That’s when I know my story can make a difference.”

Her journey has come full circle – from member to professional, from needing support to providing it.

“I’ve had a complete career change because of breast cancer. My family and friends are so proud. This job continues to help me just as much as I help others.”

We’re proud to share Michelle’s story this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to inspire others facing similar journeys.
