Celebrating Sheena – Our October Member of the Month

We celebrated something truly special at Grimsby Health & Wellbeing Centre on 30th October 2025.

Our inspirational member Sheena – a cancer survivor, community champion, and all-round incredible woman – has just completed a brave head shave to raise funds for the Pink Rose Suite, and we couldn’t be prouder to name her our Member of the Month for October.

Sheena has raised an amazing £1,810.

With the support of friends, fellow members, staff, and our wider community, Sheena’s fundraiser has gone beyond her original £1,000 goal. It’s what can happen when people come together for a good cause – and a fitting way to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Sheena’s story is one of resilience and determination. Diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer in 2019, she underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy through the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Isolated from wider support networks, she battled not only the physical side effects but also the emotional toll of cancer treatment during lockdown.

Now, five years on and cancer-free, Sheena wanted to give back – not because she had to, but because she could.

This time, I’m doing it by choice,” she said today with a smile, just before the clippers came out. “It’s my way of saying thank you – and showing others there’s hope after a diagnosis.”

After completing her treatment, Sheena was referred to Lincs Inspire’s 12-week exercise rehabilitation programme – Active Forever. It was a turning point in her recovery – helping her rebuild strength, confidence, and a sense of community.

She quickly became a regular in our Wellness Hub using the power-assisted exercise equipment, and kept up her swimming, later adding indoor and outdoor bowling to her weekly routine. Fitness has become more than just physical rehab for Sheena – it’s now a way of life, and her positivity is infectious.

“It’s not just the machines, it’s the people,” she says. “Everyone here is so supportive. You’re never alone – even when you’re working through something tough.”

Today’s head shave was full of emotion – but mostly joy, laughter, and celebration. Her hairdresser, who also shaved Sheena’s head during her treatment years ago, returned to do it again – but this time, the room was filled with clapping, cheering, and a few happy tears.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated, to The Pink Rose Suite for all they do to support those facing breast cancer and most of all – Sheena, for showing us the power of hope, community, and giving back. Tracey Clarke, operational officer at Grimsby Leisure Centre, who nominated Sheena for Member of the Month said:

Sheena embodies everything we value at the leisure centre. She has such strength and kindness along with a passion for helping others. She’s an inspiration to members and staff alike, and we are honoured to name her our Member of the Month for October.”

Sheena’s JustGiving page is still open for donations!
