We hope it will give you confidence before your visit and we look forward to welcoming you in person. This was made possible thanks to The National Lottery Reaching Communities Fund.

Accessibility of our locations

The venue has its own car park with designated parking bays. The venue is on one level, has an adapted reception desk and the main doors open automatically. There is a disabled toilet and changing facilities.

Access from the car park to the main doors is via a moderate slope. Blue badge holders park free of charge, disabled parking bays are available. The main doors open automatically. The building is on one level and has an adapted reception desk.

The disabled toilet is located ground floor within pool changing area.

Access to the pool is via a beach/sloped entry, alongside a pool-side hoist.

  • Height Adjustable Bench – Adult Sized and Wall Mounted – Currently out of use (updated November 2025)
  • Ceiling Hoist
  • Manual Hoist
  • Peninsular Toilet
  • Height Adjustable Washbasin
  • Non Slip Floor
  • Floor Space (sq. m) – 13
  • Emergency Alarm
  • Radar Key
  • Accessible Shower

For health and safety reasons we do not provide slings. Customers are asked to bring their own, which should be compatible with the loop system.

Supporting customers and their registered assistance dogs

  • Entry by owners with a registered assistance dog are welcome.  However, Emotional Support Animals/Therapy Dogs without any registered details or formal confirmation/medical instruction will be declined access.
  • For all common areas, and dry-side activities, a registered assistance dog can accompany their owner, providing they remain alongside the owner at all times and remain harnessed. This may not however be suitable for group exercise classes (please discuss in advance with a member of the fitness team)
  • The completion of a PEEP (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan) will be essential for any person using our facilities where assistance in an emergency may be required.
  • When accessing gyms the user and their assistance dog must be accompanied by a Fitness Instructor to ensure safety around moving equipment (we recommend prior notice of attendance to ensure support is available).
  • We maintain that changing villages are not suitable places for an assistance dog due to wet floors/presence of showering areas.
  • Similarly direct poolside presence by an assistance dog is also not suitable due to the presence of wet floors
  • Where a customer wishes to attend swimming we recommend the owner is accompanied, enabling the dog to be supervised whilst the owner swims. Or as an alternative we will aim to provide a volunteer to sit with the dog, within our foyer areas. This option is available at specific disability swim sessions (as published on our website) or public swim sessions, both to be arranged in advance with the relevant venue (this is subject to availability and requiring a minimum 24 hours notice, to arrange volunteer support)
  • Spectating – we can accommodate an owner and registered assistance dog to use spectator areas where access is suitable (i.e. a lift for upper floor access or ground floor spectator area access, where stairs only access is available this is not recommended). Access is caveated with the following general information:
    • Poolside spectating areas are warm humid areas, where pool chemicals are evident within the atmosphere. It is worth noting that such environments may have a detrimental effect on a dog, especially their sense of smell and vision, when remaining in a poolside environment for any length of time.
    • It is suggested that owners may wish to take their dog outside for regular breaks and to readjust their senses.
    • In addition poolside areas are cleaned with chemicals that may also affect a dog’s paws. Owners may wish to bring along suitable wipes to aid their dog when leaving the pool area
    • Owners are welcome to bring a settle mat and upon request a water bowl for their assistance dog can be provided outside the pool area
  • To access poolside spectator areas we aim to make assistance dog owners aware of the above and to confirm their acceptance of any liability regarding their dog’s well-being. Ultimately taking an assistance dog into a poolside spectating area for any length of time would be at the owners risk.
  • We will ensure front-line staff are aware of the above so they can support users to safely enjoy spectating or swimming themselves.

The venue has level access, lifts and adapted toilets. On standing events the venue has a viewing platform with a ramp for up to 6 wheelchair users or disabled customers.

For seated events the venue has up to twelve wheelchair spaces available. They are located on ground level, either on the back row of the stalls or front row of the circle. There is lift access to all levels of the venue.

We offer an infra-red sound amplification system to relay sound to customers with hearing impairments. Induction loop necklaces are available, free of charge from the Box Office.

Adjacent to the venue is a 300 capacity free car park for our visitors which include 18 blue badge bays.

Customers and their registered assistance dogs

  • Within Grimsby Auditorium – with prior notice (i.e. at the time of booking) we will highlight seating that may be suitable for an owner and registered assistance dog – for example an aisle seat or balcony seat with less passing footfall.
  • We will also inform users of any elements of a performance that might cause distress, i.e. loud bangs, flashing lights, atmospheric smoke etc. If this is likely to affect an assistance dog we will offer an option for the dog to leave the show and return at a later time. Staff or Volunteers will stay with the dog, however this will require advance notice.
  • Subject to availability/suitability of the performance, it may be possible to leave an assistance dog within the Grimsby Auditorium box office, which is a secure area, staffed throughout a performance (to be arranged at the time of a booking).

  • NELA is free to use and open to everyone.
  • NELA’s facilities meet with the provisions of the Equality Act (2010). There is no change of level between the street and our entrance, and there is a drop-kerb in close proximity to the front door. The front door is wide enough to allow easy access for wheelchair users (it is 95cm in width) and all our facilities are located on the ground floor, with no changes in level. We have sanitary facilities that are fully accessible to wheelchair users, with grab rails and an alarm pull cord. The hand basin, pedestal, soap dispenser and towel dispenser all meet the prescribed height requirements.
  • We aim to make access to our holdings as wide as possible and we welcome visitors with a diverse range of interests and research needs.
  • We endeavour to explain our holdings, services and conditions of access as clearly, comprehensively and simply as possible.
  • We welcome feedback from users about our face-to-face, postal and e-mail communications.
  • Original items from our collections are made available to the public at events such as Heritage Open Days.
  • Facsimiles of items from our collections are used in outside events, such as school visits.
  • Entry by owners with a registered assistance dog are welcome. However, Emotional Support Animals/Therapy Dogs without any registered details or formal confirmation/medical instruction will be declined access.
  • For all common areas, and dry-side activities in our leisure centres, a registered assistance dog can accompany their owner, providing they remain alongside the owner at all times and remain harnessed. For more detailed guidance regarding the accessibility of guide dogs in our facilities, please select review each facility’s information.
  • The completion of a PEEP (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan) will be essential for any person using our facilities where assistance in an emergency may be required.
    • In the event of an emergency evacuation (at any of our venues) – our priority will always be to ensure the safe exit of users and staff. Should an assistance dog be with a volunteer or member of staff we will endeavour to return the dog to its owner, however if both parties are in separate parts of a building the owner must not be allowed to re-enter to find/join their dog.
    • Staff will support users with a known disability to exit the building following our current operating procedures, any aids or adaptations may need to be left in the building if their presence would hinder a person’s safe exit (i.e. other mobility/ walking aids)
    • We will respect an assistance dog owner’s wishes where practical and safe to do so, as recorded when discussing PEEP requirements in place for regular users. We recognise that an owner may prefer the dog to assist them out of the building in an emergency and in this case escape routes will be pointed out to them. However if the owner prefers us to take the responsibility away from the dog for means of escape, they can request assistance. In these cases, a member of staff or volunteer would be allocated to the person whilst they are at the venue. Therefore advance notice of attendance and requirements (via a completed PEEP) is required to support the safety of all parties.
    • Staff have the necessary training to support users in a safe and caring manner.
