Directories can be used to track the change of inhabitants, the date built of a given house, as well as where a pub, hotel or shop might once have been.

The directories have a huge span of years, from a White’s Lincolnshire Directory of 1828 to a Grimsby and Cleethorpes Directory of 1971-72.

Building Application Files

13,000 files from c1875-1947 seeking planning approval for new houses, commercial and industrial premises, alterations, and additions to existing buildings, including out-houses, closets, garages, etc [3/708]

Under the Grimsby Corporation Act 1927 Bradley, Littlecoates, Scartho, with parts of Great Coates and Weelsby, were added to the Borough. About 2,500 building application files, 1903-1935 for ‘added areas’ were transferred to Grimsby Borough [3/709]

Planning Documents

About 3,500 plans of housing estates, roads, schools, sewers, bridges, markets gardens and parks, council buildings including fittings etc 1863-1974. This series includes plans of the Town Hall including proposed alterations and extensions which were not carried out. Only one plan by Bellamy and Hardy of Lincoln, architects of the Town Hall in 1863, appears to have survived. [3/611-614]
