Member of the Month!
October’s Member of the Month award goes to Carol McDuff – a member at Cleethorpes Leisure Centre who took the plunge last year and set herself the challenge of learning to swim!
Lessons for Adults
Learning to swim as an adult can seem like a daunting challenge, but Carol, age 77, pushed herself out of her comfort zone and started classes last September.
An incident whilst on holiday in America over 10 years ago led to Carol being rescued by lifeguards, and since then swimming was a no-go-zone.
But living just across the road from Cleethorpes Leisure Centre, and being in her retirement years, Carol decided that it was time that she faced her fear of water and learnt to swim.
Carol explained: “My husband and I were enjoying the Senior Circuit class every Wednesday at the leisure centre, but one day I told him that I wanted to learn to swim.”
Carol, added:
I switched the circuit class for swimming and now I attend swimming lessons every Tuesday evening with the incredibly patient teacher, Michelle. One week I’ll get my arms right, and not my legs, and the other week, my legs but not my arms! But she’s so lovely as is everyone else in the class.
Recently I swam the full length of the pool, and everyone was clapping and shouting encouragement! There are all ages. We had a gentleman join us in his 70s; he wants to learn to swim for his granddaughter so he can take her swimming. We’ve got two ladies who compete in triathlons and, although they can swim lovely, they want to improve their technique. There’s all sorts of people and I’ve made lovely friends with so many of them over the last year.
I’m pleased I pushed myself out of my comfort zone. It isn’t easy the older you get but I love that I can now swim. It’s a gentle and enjoyable workout!”
Well done Carol from us all at Lincs Inspire!
