Stan’s Superhuman Swimathon
Lifeguard at Grimsby Leisure Centre takes on his biggest challenge yet in aid of Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie
Riding the waves of his wife’s battle with cancer has been one of the toughest challenges for Grimsby lifeguard Stan Yeagers.
Now, four years on from Lyn’s diagnosis, he’s seeking to give something back for the support they’ve received.
He’s swum in all the great oceans of the world, but this will be his biggest endurance challenge yet…
Later this month, Stan will take to the water in a bid to swim 100m for every year of his life, totalling an epic 7.7km – 308 lengths of the Grimsby pool all in one session.
The challenge is part of Swimathon in aid of Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie, taking place at Grimsby Leisure Centre on Sunday 30th March.
Anyone wishing to sponsor Stan can do so via sponsorship forms at reception at Cleethorpes, Grimsby or Immingham pools.
Cancer runs in my family and has affected me a lot. In the last few years, we’ve received amazing support from some fantastic organisations – Macmillan, Care Link and North East Lincolnshire Council to name a few. This is my way of saying thank you and giving something back.
Stan
As news of Stan’s challenge has spread, a group of early morning swimmers have also decided they want to show their support.
Helen Newsome and Sue Warman have both battled cancer and are now in remission. They swim with Cindy Scatchord-Locke and Paula Barden.
The four friends have joined forces and entered a team for Swimathon, going by the name of ‘Stanley’s Angels’. They’ve been hard in training, and last week they surprised Stan with their t-shirts, which they will be wearing at Swimathon.
