Member of the Month

Congratulations to Angela Wood, our first member of the month for 2025!

Angela joined us in 2023, hoping to become more active and lose weight. In less than two years she’s lost seven stone, going from a size 28 to 18, and is feeling confident and happy.

Having been diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease prior to joining us, Angela manages back pain, which affects her mobility. Since joining, she’s much less reliant on her walking aids thanks to her new exercise routine.

She started with Aqua Aerobics classes at Cleethorpes pool, with the water supporting her back and offering a gentler workout. From there, she started in the gym with a tailored cardio and resistance programme. Fast forward two years and she’s now a regular at many of our weekly group exercise classes – with a love and addiction for the fitness. On Fridays she does three classes back-to-back!

I was nervous at the beginning; I’d peek into the classes and think ‘God I can’t do that!’, but the instructors have been really encouraging – they’re like my own personal cheerleaders! They’ve suggested alternative exercises and now I feel more confident, motivated and happier.

Angela

Through her new lifestyle, Angela has made plenty of friends and never feels alone at the leisure centre. On Fridays in between classes, she enjoys a well-deserved coffee with some of the Zumba regulars, before finding her groove at Aqua Aerobics.

When asked about being awarded member of the month, Angela said: “It’s a lovely surprise. It means a lot to be recognised from the many thousands of members.”

Joss Varley, Fitness Supervisor at the leisure centre said: “A massive well done to Angela! She’s lost heck of a lot of weight through determination and hard work. She’s consistent and works really hard but, more importantly, she has grown in confidence so much. She used to be the person in the back row hiding, but now she’s got new gear and is always on the front row.”

Angela also set herself the challenge of walking 62 miles in January as part of a sponsored challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK. Today she reached 69 miles with a week to go. Well done, Angela!
