Alastair’s Life-Changing Transformation
After a period of profound personal change following the loss of his partner, Alastair Town (56) was left feeling isolated and questioning his sense of purpose. A simple decision to get involved with his local leisure centre has helped transform his life.
Today, Alastair describes himself as being in the best physical condition he has been in for many years, but it is the change in his mental wellbeing and his connection with other people that he values most.
His journey has taken him from supporting his sister-in-law at Lincs Inspire’s Inclusive Sports sessions, to becoming a volunteer with the charitable trust himself, joining the leisure centre as a member and discovering a love of yoga and fitness classes.
Despite feeling apprehensive about joining classes that he felt were predominantly attended by women, Alastair quickly found himself welcomed by the groups.
“Before joining I’d become isolated, but the friends I’ve made here have helped me reconnect. The community already feels like a family. The support has given me confidence to challenge myself in ways I hadn’t previously thought possible.” Alastair explained.
“The classes have been transformative! I’ve been able to come off medication for mental health and anxiety because they’ve helped so much. The yoga is therapeutic. I’ve found a calmness. It can be difficult to try something new, but now I just can’t get enough of it! It’s addictive! These classes are like my drug of choice!”
Alastair, Volunteer and Member
With World Mental Health Day (October 10) highlighting the importance of looking after our mental wellbeing and staying connected, Alastair’s experience shows how taking that first step, whether it is joining a group, trying a new activity or simply having a conversation, can lead to positive change.
“I don’t think people talk enough about mental health issues. Starting the conversation can make all the difference. Hopefully by sharing my story and being open about my experiences, I can challenge that stigma and help others.” Alastair added.
Alastair’s journey shows that improving wellbeing can begin with something as simple as saying yes to an opportunity.
Wellbeing Fayre
Lincs Inspire is encouraging local people to take their own first step towards better wellbeing by attending its upcoming Wellbeing Fayre.
The event will bring together a range of community services, giving visitors the chance to try free taster activities, and find out what support and organisations are available locally.
Whether someone is looking to become more active, meet new people, volunteer, find support or simply have a friendly chat, the fayre provides an opportunity to discover what is available and find something that could work for them.
The Wellbeing Fayre takes place at:
Grimsby Health and Wellbeing Centre (original Grimsby Leisure Centre) on Sunday October 4, 10am to 2pm.
