Brave Mum and Her Boy Go Bald for Charity
After one of the toughest years imaginable, Nanette is doing something extraordinary – and her son Chase is right by her side.
On Wednesday 17th June, Nanette and Chase, who are frequent visitors to Grimsby Health & Wellbeing Centre, will shave their heads together in a Brave the Shave challenge, raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, the charity that was there for them every step of the way.
Just over a year ago, Nannette was diagnosed with tonsil cancer.
What began as a persistent sore throat and earache turned into a journey that included three surgeries, six weeks of daily radiotherapy, weekly chemotherapy, and even having teeth removed to protect her from the devastating side effects of treatment.
However, last month, Nanette received the news she’d been waiting for: clear results. She is cancer free.
A Promise Kept
When Nanette first started chemotherapy, Chase made her a promise – if she lost her hair, he would shave his head in solidarity. She kept her hair through treatment, but the bond between them never wavered.
So when Nannette decided she wanted to give something back, she asked Chase if he’d join her. He said yes, instantly!
Why Macmillan?
Macmillan were there at every turn, explaining the complicated stuff when the medical words became overwhelming, helping navigate what support was available, and offering a calm, human presence during an incredibly frightening time. For Nanette, raising money for them isn’t just a gesture. It’s personal.
As well as fundraising for Macmillan, Nannette will be donating her hair to the Little Princess Trust, which makes wigs for children who have lost their hair through illness.
It had to be a proper sacrifice,” Nanette said. “Chase and I love to swim, but a sponsored swim didn’t feel like enough.”
