Member of the Month
Inspiring member makes positive steps to recovery following a life-changing heart attack
His story has inspired our fitness team and members alike – retired train driver Shaun Lagusz (67) is awarded February member of the month for the progress he’s made on his journey to recovery.
Whilst at Grimsby A&E after experiencing chest pains that he thought was indigestion, Shaun suffered a severe heart attack in January 2024. Doctors and paramedics were able to revive him, and he was rushed to Castle Hill Hospital in Hull.
It was determined that the cause of Shaun’s heart attack was due to a blockage to the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery, and he was fitted with a stent to widen it.
In the following weeks, Shaun gradually reintroduced exercise to his routine and with the help of the fitness team at Grimsby Leisure Centre, was able to rebuild his strength and stamina.
I’ve always enjoyed fitness – I used to swim with Stan who lifeguards here. Now it’s all about balance and doing the right amount. I try to take it steady, and it helps having Jenny, Mo and the fitness team there to keep an eye on me. I exercise at a similar time each day, sometimes with my wife, and I’ve made friends with lots of other like-minded people – we all look out for each other. I always leave the gym feeling a lot better!
Shaun
His non-defeatist attitude has seen him progress from gentle walking to a daily exercise on the treadmill, cross trainer, rowing and resistance machines – all the while being careful to take it steady.
Jenny Jones, Fitness Supervisor at Grimsby Leisure Centre nominated Shaun for the award. She said: “It’s rewarding to see how far Shaun has come. He’s shown so much determination and he’s been an inspiration to others. Well done, Shaun!”
Well done to Shaun on his progress – we’re with you every step of the way!
