“I Feel Like a Different Person”

Gill's Weight Management Course Journey

Meet Gill – whose inspiring journey shows it’s never too late to make positive changes. After overcoming breast cancer twice and living with arthritis, she discovered a renewed sense of purpose through our Weight Management Course, building healthier habits, confidence and a genuine love for exercise.

Following her second breast cancer diagnosis and radiotherapy, Gill struggled with fatigue and found it difficult to get moving again. After attending some gentle movement sessions, she felt ready to take the next step by joining our Weight Management Course – a decision that marked the beginning of her journey towards better health.

Although she had previously attended weight loss programmes, Gill quickly realised this course offered something different.

Led by Lincs Inspire’s Weight Management Coach David, the course gave Gill a new understanding of nutrition, including portion sizes, protein intake, meal timing and how the body uses energy. Learning about Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) helped her realise that healthy eating should be tailored to the individual rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

I thought I knew everything about food, but I learned so much more. The weekly food diary showed me where I was going wrong. I wasn’t always eating the wrong foods – I was eating the wrong things at the wrong time.

During the eight-week course, Gill lost the half stone she had been trying to lose for months. More importantly, she gained the knowledge and confidence to make healthy habits part of everyday life.

“I don’t think about food the same way anymore. Food is fuel.” 

As part of the programme, participants receive access to weekly exercise sessions. Gill began with chair-based exercise before gradually progressing to the gym and a variety of fitness classes. After completing the course, she continued attending sessions and now regularly enjoys Clubbercise, Body Combat, Boogie Tuesday and Salsa Aerobics.

“I don’t see exercise as a chore anymore. I look forward to coming.”

The welcoming atmosphere and supportive instructors made it easier for Gill to try new activities and keep coming back.

The changes have extended far beyond weight loss. Gill has more energy, reduced arthritis pain, greater confidence and an overall sense of wellbeing. Her husband “can’t believe the difference”, and she feels like a “different person”. 

Now a regular member at our leisure centres, Gill encourages anyone considering the course to take that first step.

Her advice is simple:
Anybody who thinks they can’t do it, you can. You just have to build up gradually.
